5 Natural Remedies For Bacterial Vaginosis

All women know how uncomfortable bacterial vaginosis (BV) can be when it goes untreated. BV affects 1 in 4 women in the United States as it’s a common vaginal health issue. The vagina is more vulnerable to infection whenever the pH is disrupted.

Often mistaken for a yeast infection, BV also is caused by an overproduction of harmful bacteria in the vagina. Women who have BV can experience an unusual gray discharge, a fishy vaginal odor, itching, or burning. Although a quick doctor’s visit can fix BV when mild, most women prefer to treat it at home. Pregnant women should consult a doctor before trying any of these natural remedies. Here are 5 natural remedies for treating BV at home:

Yogurt

Yes, plain yogurt. Yogurt is a probiotic that contains healthy bacteria. Probiotics support the bacterial colony in the vagina helping to balance the pH. If you are experiencing pain during BV, Medical News Today suggests freezing the plain yogurt for a cooling effect to help alleviate pain.

Garlic

Garlic is widely known for its natural antibacterial properties. In this study, participants took either an oral metronidazole or garlic supplement to treat bacterial vaginosis. They found that the garlic tablets were just as effective. Garlic should never be inserted into the vagina and should only be taken orally.

Boric Acid

Boric acid has been a popular go-to for naturally treating BV and yeast infections. The antifungal properties in this specific boron compound is perfect for fighting vaginal infections. Boric acid suppositories should always be inserted into the vagina. There will be a gritty discharge after using these suppositories, and it’s suggested to wear a panty liner.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is naturally antibacterial and antifungal. The suppositories can be inserted into the vagina for a number for days for treatment. For topical use do not use directly, it can be diluted and paired with honey or coconut oil.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cidar Vinegar may be effective for balancing the vaginal pH. It can be diluted with water and used to rinse the vulva. ACV also comes in supplements to be taken orally to treat BV naturally.

During natural treatment make sure that you’re wearing breathable, cotton underwear. Bacterial vaginosis can worsen with restricting underwear made of certain fabric material as it traps moisture and causes more bacteria to grow. Remember, cotton underwear is your friend!
